Copilot Gemini retirement: planned and completed notices

The news at the time

The original GitHub notice scheduled Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 3 Flash retirement across Copilot experiences for 2026-07-31. This is a Copilot-product notice and does not establish retirement of the same models from other providers or APIs.

The planned alternatives were Gemini 3.1 Pro and Gemini 3.5 Flash. The notice also warned that enterprise model policies might need to permit the alternatives before users could select them.

Follow-up checked during renewal

GitHub’s 2026-07-31 follow-up reports the Copilot deprecation as completed. Its alternative table lists Gemini 3.1 Pro (Preview) and Gemini 3.6 Flash, replacing the earlier Gemini 3.5 Flash suggestion. These are that notice’s alternatives, not a claim of unchanged availability today.

What to review before applying this

Confirm the specific Copilot experience, organization policy and currently supported models. The later completion notice changes a suggested alternative; do not keep presenting the initial suggestion as the final migration guidance.

Editorial review suggestions; no hands-on product experiment was performed.
